Maria Sieben

My art has become my playground. It is a means of self expression and exploration of techniques and innovations. I start a painting by building an underpainting with emphasis on colour and shape. My work is intuitive and expressive. I experiment, explore, discover, and sometimes, despair! The process of doing the art keeps me coming back to the studio.

I am a self taught artist with a keen interest in trying out many things. When I began to paint, I used oils, then tried watercolors, which I find too meticulous. Now I use acrylics for most of my work. Mixed media or collage with my own painted papers has become a favorite method of working. I am fascinated with paper and what can be done with it. It is my goal to explore making art with painted papers to produce patterned, abstract artworks.
