“A New Beginning” by Nicole Deibert

I feel this show is about transitioning from leaving my career as a Scenic Artist to becoming a full-time fine artist.

Elements of my paintings are rooted in my Scenic Art, namely my approach to painting watercolours is based on how I would paint backdrops for theatre. The textures that I use in my mixed media have a connection to Scenic Art along with the strong contrast that’s dominant in my artwork.

When painting for theatre, I tended to enhance the contrast between colours so that the set pieces would read better for the audience, that still dominates my artwork now.

I studied Digital Arts and Media in 2002 at MacEwan, and I really took to photography at that time. One of my professors told me to paint my photographs, so that’s predominantly what I am doing now. I use my own photographs or ones that I have had permission to use as the subject of my paintings.
