Utility Box Beautification Project

The City of Spruce Grove invites visual artists to showcase their creativity by submitting their original artwork (Including photography) for the beautification of our traffic control utility boxes, also referred to as traffic signal cabinets. The Utility Box Beautification Program aims to transform these metal cabinets into works of art, supporting efforts to create vibrant, welcoming and inclusive places. We invite visual artists from a variety of backgrounds, styles, and techniques to showcase their talents and create eye-catching, public art throughout the city.  All styles and techniques are welcome.

Up to four (4) artists will be selected through this Call to Artists to showcase their original pieces on these boxes. Each Artist will submit up to six (6) designs which will be displayed on City owned traffic signal utility boxes throughout Spruce Grove for approximately three to five years, pending the condition of the wraps.  Selected artists will work collaboratively with the City’s Public Art Team and, where required, refine designs or design elements to ensure the alignment, formatting and image transfers best reflect the submitted designs. The original artwork submissions for the designs will be created in any 2D medium. Selected artists will be required to convert final designs into one of the required file types. Final designs will then be transferred onto an adhesive wrap that will be installed by a third-party vendor at locations determined by the City.

At this time, only City-owned traffic control boxes located on public property are part of this program. Utility boxes located on private property, such as front yards, are not included.

This Call is open to visual artists residing within 500km of the City of Spruce Grove.

Total Artist Budget: $600 per design selected.

Note: The City reserves the right to select up to four designs submitted by the same artist.

Submission deadline: Monday, April 8, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. (MST)
