Our independent judges are chosen from the wider artist community for their knowledge and experience in the visual arts. They are subject matter experts who bring a fair and professional view to our selection process. To keep things unbiased, each judge is only used once every 24 months. They are completely independent from our organization and make their decisions without any input from our staff or board. All decisions made by the judges are final, helping to ensure a transparent and fair process.

Four Winged Fox

Nova Nichols

Mixed Media Sculpture

From the Judge: Great use of the medium. The scale, colour and attention to detail is wonderful.

Third Place:

Divine Protector of the Sun

Madisen Minks

SPACHS

From the Judge: Absolutely love the use of colour and texture/mark making. The eagle’s head is my favourite part as you nailed the colours and texture.

Second Place:

Magic of Nature (Bir)

Katelyn Graham

Gouache

SGCHS

From the Judge: Wonderful composition and use of medium in a fun illustration style. Great use of colour and tonal values to create a scene. I love the layering. I’d like to see a whole series of these. Just be careful of presentation, make sure edges are squared off and mounted evenly.

First Place:

Nostalgia

Liz Kosolofski

Mixed Media

SGCHS

From the Judge: Amazing use of mixed media! You made a huge variety of mediums come together to form a cohesive and meaningful piece. Love the technical skill and presentation, to effectively communicate your ideas. I also loved your “painted pillars” painting.

Grade 11

Honourable Mention:

Coiled Snake

Paige Flynn

Coloured Pencil

SGCHS

From the Judge: Exceptional use of colour, interesting composition and use of atmospheric perspective. Keep honing your skills with coloured pencil.

Third Place:

Monotone Skull

Paige Flynn

Chalk Pastel

SGCHS

From the Judge: Amazing technical ability. Fantastic composition. Clean execution and attention to detail. I love how parts of the skull fall away into the background. Juxtaposed with areas of fine details.

Second Place:

Self Portrait

Harris Mills

Charcoal

SGCHS

From the Judge: Great Idea! The pose, title and great execution of the medium as well as accurate proportions to this dynamic self portrait made me choose this portrait above all the rest. The subtle dark values of the collar on the shirt are so vital to the composition. The texture and tonal value in the hair in contrast to the smooth texture of the exaggerated chin as well as the details in the eyes show that you know what you’re doing. I love the humour you brought to this piece.

First Place:

Archer

Bailey Casavant
