About Esta Baker

Esta Baker, Indigenous Artist and Photographer

Tansi, I am Esta Baker of Esta Bee Photographer/Artist. I am an indigenous photographer/artist from Spruce Grove, Alberta.

I was born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories but raised in Vegreville, Alberta, a farming town. I was homeschooled with my five siblings from preschool to graduation. During those years, I explored art, writing and creating.  I loved painting, coloring, cooking, reading and writing.

In 2014, I got my first camera, a Canon Rebel. This fueled what was once a small hobby, into a passion that has brought me here. I am a landscape, cityscape, wildlife and nature photographer with a love for candid photography. I travel across Alberta and Western Canada regularly visiting provincial parks, small towns, cities, trails, rivers and lakes.

Despite photography being a passion, I have learned it is an incredible learning venture. Over the years, I have begun doing small online courses in photography. I have completed courses in Adobe Lightroom, Long Exposure, Night Photography, Landscape, as well as a Photography Masterclass. In 2018, I went to NAIT for a Photoshop course.

I became a member of the Allied Arts Council of Spruce Grove late 2017. Getting to know the art gallery members has been inspiring; their passion has pushed me to start exploring and learning.

I started professionally painting in 2018 and that summer did numerous art walks and markets in my area. My medium is acrylic in abstract realism. My art is natured based, with landscapes and birch. Inspired by my traveling adventures and life.

In the fall of 2019, I joined the Indigenous Artists Collective of Edmonton. I cannot wait to continue to learn and grow with this incredible community of artists and photographers. I believe that art is not only the product of individual inspiration but is also the result of the collective.

Thank you and blessings,

Esta Bee

Artist Statement

Photography to me is an exploration and a constant learning process. One where I capture memories and moments of my life of adventure and the people I meet.

‘Photography is the art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with they way you see them’

Elliott Erwitt
