Kemp, Lorna


Lorna Kemp was born in Norquay, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Her formal art training includes the University of Alberta, Red Deer College and R & F Encaustics in Seattle, Washington, the Encaustic Art Institute, Cerrillos, New Mexico as well a bevy of workshops and continual, ongoing experimentation.

Lorna is recognized as one of Canada’s most up and coming encaustic painters and her work is well known internationally. While her subjects are universal, she excels in portraying abstract renderings. She is perhaps best known for her work in and around Alberta and B.C., Canada. Lorna’s technique includes a tradition of strong texture and design with strong use of colour and form, with a uniquely individual personal style.

Lorna’s paintings can be found in many provinces in Canada, as well as Norway, England and the USA. Most recently Lorna has had work accepted into the Pyramid Gallery in Cerrillos, New Mexico, and the Encaustic Masters – Inspirational Visual Voices in the Columbia River Gallery, Troutdale, Oregon.

Lorna has taught beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in Encaustic Wax Painting at the University of Alberta, Devonian Botanic Gardens; Red Deer College, Red Deer, Alberta; City Art Centre, Edmonton, Alberta; Harcourt House Art Centre, Edmonton, Alberta; The Fibre Art Festival in Gibson’s Landing, British Columbia, Canada; Phoenix, Arizona, Olds College, CAVA, Edmonton, Alberta and in many art communities in and around Edmonton, such as Barrhead; Redwater; Sherwood Park; Spruce Grove, Wabamun and Arts on the Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.

In 2010 Lorna founded a group of Encaustic Artists known as Wimmin in Wax and they have had shows at the Naess Gallery in Edmonton, CAVA, Spruce Grove Art Gallery in May / June 2011, U of A Extention Gallery September 2011 and in the Hinton Library in October 2011. April 2012 Jeff Allen Gallery.
